Management
Jim Hoak
— Chairman. Mr. Hoak has spent his entire business career
as a founder and senior executive of communications companies.
He began in the communications business after serving as a
legal assistant to a Commissioner at the Federal Communications
Commission in 1969-70. He co-founded Heritage Communications,
Inc. in 1971 and was CEO from its inception. HCI was a cable
television company, which later expanded into television and
radio, outdoor advertising, and other media businesses. It
was sold to Tele-Communications, Inc. for $1.5 billion in
1987. He then co-founded Heritage Media Corporation in 1987,
purchasing the radio and television properties of Heritage
Communications, Inc., where he served as Chairman. These television
stations were in similar markets to those sought by Hoak Media
Corporation. Heritage Media expanded into other advertising-based
communications businesses and was sold to NewsCorporation
for $1.4 billion in 1997. Both companies were traded on the
NYSE. Mr. Hoak has formed and operated other communications
businesses, including Crown Media, Inc., a cable television
company in partnership with Hallmark Cards, Inc., in 1991.
It was sold in 1995. In addition, he has been a principal
of Hoak Capital Corporation, a private equity firm with investments
in the communications field from 1991 to the present. He currently
serves as a director of three public companies (PanAmSat Corporation,
Pier 1 Imports, Inc., and Texas Industries, Inc.) and several
private firms. Mr. Hoak graduated from Yale University in
1966 and from Stanford University School of Law in 1969.
Eric D. Van
den Branden — President & Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Van den Branden
has worked with Jim Hoak since he joined Heritage Media Corporation
in 1995. At Heritage Media, he served as Vice President of
Development managing the company's developmental efforts by
seeking out complementary acquisition opportunities that broadened
the Company's exposure to the advertising and marketing industry.
With senior management, Mr. Van den Branden assisted in the
Company's entry into the direct marketing industry through
the acquisition of DIMAC Corporation for $260 million, and
in the ultimate sale of Heritage Media to The News Corporation
in August of 1997. Prior to joining Heritage Media, he served
as Vice President in the Media and Communications Finance
Division at NationsBank (now Bank of America). Since the sale
of Heritage Media in 1997, he has worked with Jim Hoak as
the President of James M. Hoak & Co, a Dallas based private
equity firm. He currently serves as a director for a number
of private firms and is a member of the Young Presidents'
Organization. He graduated from Arizona State University in
1988, and received a Masters in International Management from
The American Graduate School of International Management in
1989.
Rich Adams — Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Adams joined Hoak Media in January 2007 and brings over 30 years of broadcasting experience to the Company. Mr. Adams is responsible for overseeing all of the Company's television stations. Prior to joining the Company, he served as Senior Vice President for Gray Television acting as General Manager for KWTX-TV, the CBS affiliate in Waco, Texas, while overseeing the company's other stations in Texas and Colorado. Before that he served for over 20 years as General Manager of KXII-TV, the CBS affiliate in Sherman, Texas. Mr. Adams is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. He enlisted in the Army where he served with the 1st Armored Division and 1st Cavalry Division. His national broadcast service includes a 19 year involvement with the TV Music License Committee as well as a term as President of the Okalahoma Association of Broadcasters and as a director of the Texas Association for Broadcasters. He is currently serving on the CBS Affiliates Board.
Jeff Rutan
— VP Finance & Controller. Mr. Rutan joined Hoak Media in May 2006 and brings over 13 years of finance and accounting experience to the Company including seven years of public accounting experience with KPMG. Prior to joining KPMG he worked in the corporate accounting department of Liberty Sports, Inc., a regional cable sports programming company. Joining KPMG as a senior accountant in 1997 Mr. Rutan progressed through the ranks to the level of senior manager while auditing public and private companies in the media and technology sectors including Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation (now Univision Radio), Buford Cable, Electronic Data Systems, and Acxiom Corporation. In May 2004 he joined First Broadcasting, a radio move-in company, as Controller handling treasury management and accounting functions. Mr. Rutan graduated in 1993 from Texas Christian University with a BBA - Accounting and has held a CPA designation since 1995. He is also a member of the Texas Society of CPAs and the Broadcast Cable Financial Managers Association.
Tom Hertz — Regional Business Manager. Mr. Tom Hertz has been in the Broadcast business since 1989. After graduating in 1985 from the University of Mary with a BS degree in Accounting and Business Administration, he worked briefly for Eide Helmeke (now Eide Bailly) CPA firm. In 1986 he went to work as the business/finance and insurance manager for a local automobile/boat dealership. In June of 1989 he joined Meyer Broadcasting Co as Assistant Treasurer. Meyer Broadcasting owned several television and radio stations, a recording studio and film company in North Dakota, as well as the local Cable system. In August of 2002, he became the Controller for Wicks Television, handling treasury management and overseeing the accounting functions for six television stations. He is a member of the Broadcast and Cable Financial Managers Association.
Kelly Slayton
— Secretary. Kelly Slayton has worked with Jim Hoak
since she joined Crown Media in 1992. She is Jim Hoak's Executive
Assistant and is Secretary of James M. Hoak & Co., and
Hoak Capital Corporation. Prior to 1992, Kelly worked as Executive
Assistant to the President of Brinker International. She graduated
from West Texas A&M University in 1981.
